A former Indonesian maid is jailed 10 weeks and fined S$2,000 for abandoning her newborn baby in a rooftop garden in Eunos, and overstaying here for 273 days.
The mother of the baby abandoned at Eunos is sentenced to 4 weeks jail.
Investigations revealed that Indriani, 27, abandoned her baby on 18 April in a multi-storey carpark in Eunos Crescent.
The infant’s mouth was stuffed with mud and dried leaves, and he still had his umbilical cordattached. The baby was found alive that same day by a retiree.
The court heard that Indriani arrived in Singapore last March to work as a domestic worker. In July, she ran away from her employer’s residence and prostituted herself to earn money. However, in October, she discovered her pregnancy and didn’t know who the father was.
She gave birth to a baby boy on 18 April at about 2am and dug a 10cm hole to bury the newborn. Indriani was arrested near Eunos MRT Station on 24 April.
According to a psychiatric evaluation by the Institute of Mental Health, she was suffering from amajor depressive disorder when she abandoned the baby.
The baby is currently placed under foster care.
