THE food safety watchdog here is encouraging consumers to buy more local produce, from farms that have to stick to stringent quality and production procedures.

Doing this, said the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) on Tuesday, would spur farms here to increase production to meet demand, and ensure their long-term sustainability.

This ensures that Singapore has a strong buffer against food supply disruptions for key food items such as eggs, fish and vegetables. For example, AVA aims to raise local egg production from the current 23 per cent of Singapore’s total egg supply to 30 per cent in a few years.

To boost consumer confidence and demand for local eggs, AVA is tightening the guidelines for its quality assurance scheme for locally farmed eggs.

Egg farms under the scheme are now required to implement a system that will allow them to trace and recall produce quickly.

This involves stamping the farm’s code and the production date on eggs. The farms also need to put in place a recall system that will enable immediate recall and removal of eggs from retail outlets when necessary.
