Early this morning, a 33-year-old man, who was in possession of housebreaking tools and attempted to commit theft at a unit along Redhill Close, was swiftly arrested due to the prompt actions of two public-spirited neighbours.

At about 1.15 am, 53-year-old Mr Abdul Rahman returned home and spotted a man, who was a stranger to the area, behaving suspiciously outside his neighbour’s unit. Sensing something amiss, he kept observation on the man. When Mr Abdul Rahim saw the man meddling with the padlock of his neighbour’s unit, he shouted at the suspect who then fled down the staircase. Mr Abdul Rahman gave chase, and managed to detain the suspect at another level of the block. He sought the assistance of another neighbour to keep watch on the suspect together while the police was called.

Upon receiving the call, officers from Clementi Police Division responded to the scene and arrested the suspect. After conducting a check, the officers found housebreaking implements comprising a pair of pliers, several screwdrivers and latex gloves in his possession.

The suspect will be charged in Court on 10 June 2011 for Loitering With The Intent To Commit Theft under Section 22(4)(b) of the Miscellaneous Offences (Public Order and Nuisance) Act, Chapter 184. If convicted, the suspect faces punishment with imprisonment for a term up to six months.
